Cholecystectomy


Cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove gallbladder. Cholecystectomy is required if someone experience any pain from gallstones which block the flow bile. This is very common surgery. It is performed by inserting a very small video camera and small surgical instruments to remove the gallbladder.
Types of surgery:
1.     Minimally invasive cholecystectomy- In laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the surgeon makes four small cuts. Tiny video camera is inserted from one of the cuts. The surgeon inserts tools from the other cuts and remove the gallbladder.
2.     Open cholecystectomy- In open cholecystectomy, a 6 inch cut is made in abdomen below ribs on the right side.  To get to the liver and gallbladder, the muscle and tissue is pulled back.
Why is it required?
It is generally performed to treat gallstones. Cholecystectomy is recommended if-
1.     You have gallstones.
2.     You have pancreatic inflammation.
3.     You have gallbladder inflammation.
Risks involved:
·        Blood clot.
·        Infection.
·        Heart problem.
·        Bleeding.
·        Leak in bile.
Recovery
The recovery is different for both the surgeries. If you had:
1.     Laparoscopic cholecystectomy- The patient can go home on the same day or have to stay overnight just for the observation. It may take a week for full recovery.
2.     Open cholecystectomy- The patient needs to stay 2-3 days in hospital for the recovery. Once you reach home it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get fully recovered.
