Types of Surgeries
There are four
types of procedures:
- Shock wave
lithotripsy
- Ureteroscopy
- Percutaneous
nephrolithotomy or percutaneous nephrolithotripsy
- Open
surgery
Shock
Wave Lithotripsy
This is the most common treatment
for kidney stone. It is preferred for small or medium stones. No cuts are made
for this surgery.
Ureteroscopy
For the
treatment of stones in kidney and ureters, ureteroscopy is used. The doctor
uses a flexible scope to find the stones and then remove it. Cuts are not made
for the surgery. You will be given anesthesia during the surgery.
Percutaneous
Nephrolithotomy or Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy
This surgery
is required only if the stones are big in size. It uses a small tube to reach
the stones and then break it using high-frequency sound waves.
This surgery
can be done in following two ways:
Nephrolithotomy:
The stone is removed through a tube by the surgeon.
Nephrolithotripsy: The surgeon use sound waves or
laser to break into small pieces and then vacuums it out using the suction
machine.
Open
Surgery
This
surgery is only done if the stone is large and is not removed by any other
treatment.
